I had plans to cover Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent) BGP Route Reflectors (BGP RR) in a full-featured post, but… But a lot of new stuff suddenly hit me as I joined Nuage Networks team.
Ok, lyrics aside, during my preparation for BGP exam I noticed that BGP route reflectors behavior defined throughout several chapters and there was no summary diagram (or cheatlist) that covered route reflectors decisions and actions. So, here you are:
This diagram shows the complete decision path of a BGP RR when it needs to reflect a route, including action items for different kind of neighbors (Non-client, Client, regular peer).
Note, that Nokia’s (Alcatel-Lucent) definitions were used for RIB structures (RIB-In, RIB-Out), though the decisions that RR has to make should no differ between vendors.

This time I will cover in details basic Layer 3 VPN
(L3VPN or VPRN) configuration, and I decided to kill two birds with one stone by inviting Juniper vMX (read here
on how to add vMX to Unetlab) to our cozy Alcatel-Lucent environment.

BGP is so huge that I had no option but to write about it in several parts:
Part 1 dedicated to basic eBGP/iBGP configuration. We will practice with common BGP configuration procedures at first, then learn how to export routes into BGP process and prevent unnecessary route reflection by means of
split-horizon over eBGP links. After that we will see how to configure iBGP to spread eBGP learned routes across Autonomous Systems. I will cover the necessity of full-mesh iBGP topology and the use of the
next-hop-self command for iBGP peers.
